What liberation comes from letting go
Completely of every regulation
You had set upon yourself
To do things a certain way and not to do certain things;
Of who you would become in the brave new future;
To accept and to feel
The radiant living joy of having always been
And remaining someone who sometimes
Follows regulations very strictly
And others acts without
Ideals, morals, [...]

3 Haikus
The duckling paddling
against the outgoing tide
makes little headway.
******************
The cat tries to hide
his waste by digging a hole
in linoleum.
******************
The sick fish displayed
in the dirty tank mouths at
the floor upside down.
The cardinal order of doings
The fanatical adherence to the belief
that more than what we do and how it is done
the cardinal order of doings is utmost important
exhausts the believer like the end of spring
when the days begin emitting the heat the mind’s winter
monologues have been babbling how much they’re yearn for,
which like a baby tiger reared lovingly suddenly
leap up [...]
5 Haikus
A leaf scrapes along
the rutty street surface. This
City’s a desert.
Sounds that arise don’t
Disturb the deadened quietude.
They punctuate it.
The moon, hanging low
And yellow, sinks slowly down
the late afternoon.
Snakes in national
Parks idle in the footpaths
Keeping perfectly still.
Flags – America,
California – are whipped by
vicious blowing winds.
the venice beach artist
the venice beach artist
famous for making his living
more than twenty years
rollerblading up and down
the boardwalk dressed in turban
and wrap of swirling colors
with an amp strapped to his back
connected to an electric guitar
he plays all day
sees a tourist looking at him
and rolls up to her
singing a song
she digs a dollar out of her pocket
and hands it [...]

The train

Feeling of peace
I feel my first feeling of peace
with where I am ever (ever:
a strong word; I almost wrote “awhile”
but thinking it over I couldn’t re-
collect a single instance in my life
of such a feeling of peace)
sitting in the sun on a bench by the entry
to the subway station, concentrating on
the sound within the sound of [...]
I am not listening
to any music now
now being this
period of my life
days, weeks, who knows
how long? Whatever
sound I heard that asserted
itself with more force
than the tweets of a bird
or the cat shifting
his position on the couch
would get embedded
and my mind has enough
on its plate as it is.
A leaf scrapes along
the surface of the street.
This city [...]
